Loved the connection between these three women and how they kept their secrets from each other, and still find a link that kept them understanding each others point of view. It takes place in Baghdad , a diplomats wife, a secretary, and an artist all living under the regime of Saddam Hussein where women have little voice. Everyone is watching, neighbors can turn on each other, and your unable to walk down the street freely because the secret police can show up at your door at any time. Huda & Rania were friends and remember their lives before the war and the beauty of the land, they had long parted ways based on a disagreement. Huda works as a secretary in the embassy and meets Ally. One day, the secret police ask Huda to watch Ally and tell them everything she does and threaten her young son if she doesn't do what they say. The three women connect and begins a story of how each women will do anything to protect themselves and loved ones, despite the risk. Beautifully written, emotionally charged. This book is worth reading to understand the lives in Iraq.
