This poignant story revolves around three women, Huda, Ally and Rania and their lives during the terrifying reign of Saddam Hussein. Based off of the author's own personal experiences of being befriended by an informant during her life in Iraq during the same regime.
What starts as a slow fire burns to an almighty roaring inferno as I found myself getting pulled in to each character's character and struggles. The story may have started slowly, but I soon found myself engrossed. Huda was my favorite character. She is a woman caught between a rock and a hard place. She does not want to be an informant but has little choice when the threat to have her son join the Lion's Club was issued to her. All the different directions tugging at her made her a compelling character to follow. Though they all were interesting in their own way.
This was one of the most heartbreaking, beautiful novels I've read in a while. Simply gorgeous!
