I won an arc of this one through Bookish First. It's beautifully written and it's a very appropriate portrayal of the time period in which it was set. Wilkinson shows care and sensitivity to the sociopolitical events occurring, while at the same time making sure she doesn't pull any punches at all. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. The characters were well rounded. The details were heartbreaking. The author dealt with sensitive subjects beautifully and provided an accurate portrayal of the frustrations associated with white ladies who travel to other countries and insinuate themselves into another culture, the damage that they can cause no matter the good intentions.

As an aside, the additional extras that came with this book - the two necklaces and the cashmere scarf, were simply lovely. My daughter's claimed them all for her dress up kit, but I'm hoping to get the scarf back at least.
