Huda and Rania start off with a promise: a promise to always love each other and be blood sisters forever. The book then propels the reader to 2002 when Huda is a grown woman with a son and a husband. In a world where even the slightest connection with foreigners can get you killed, Huda works for Australians just so she can have money to pay the bills and put food on the table. Women in such a world must be brave and careful. The author did not only a great job at making you empathic towards the characters but also painted the background so vividly that you feel like you are there. You feel the pain of the girls as they become blood sisters by piercing their thumbs, you feel the fear and stress that Huda holds trying to care for her family; the painting of pictures using words is something to thoroughly enjoy in this book. I wanted to know more about Huda and Rania. I want to know how they survive. I’m definitely going to purchase this book when I can!
