When the Apricots Bloom has an important perspective to share - that of women facing the early 2000's in Baghdad.

With powerful, descriptive prose, you can smell the tea brewing, feel the tension and anticipation of visits from secret police, and understand the deep friendship between the key characters. Fear is the overlying emotion, however, and it tinges the story with a dark overtone. Even so, this is balanced by love - of friends, family, and children.

Wilkerson herself was in Baghdad during this time, lending even more credence to the stories contained. Her factual credibility is important in recounting events, but her personal experiences ensure that scenes are richly painted with relatable emotions. The stories are fictional, but the experience is real - and the reader can feel that. When the Apricots Bloom is an important read.
