The author draws on her own experiences living in Iraq for this gripping novel and the authenticity of her accounts shines through. Her lived experience provides a richness that even the best research cannot. Even though it is fiction, I learned so much about a culture closed to most of us.

This is the story of three strong women who come together to save themselves and their families from the harsh dictatorship of Iraq under Saddam Hussein. I loved that this showed Iraqi women how they really are, not as the meek, submissive women the media often portrays them to be. I cannot imagine anyone living under such a brutal regime and not having the strength and courage these women show. When you really stop to think about it, the stereotypes don't even make sense.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who wants to be inspired by a true portrait of courage.
