This isn't the type of book I usually read, so I was nervous at first that it would not hold my interest as much as my usual thrillers. I didn't need to worry! I admit that I didn't know much about this culture or time period, and I loved how much this book was able to teach me while telling an entertaining story.
I loved that the story was based on Gina Wilkinson's own experiences as a foreign correspondent in Iraq. This certainly gives her a particular point of view that other authors wouldn't be able to replicate. Her author's note at the end was particularly interesting to me.
This story made me feel especially lucky to be a United States citizen. I can't imagine having to deal with the trials these characters go through. I love how books like this are able to help me gain perspective too.
