The author see's this sign, "What would you do if you weren't afraid?" posted at her new job site. She is immediately drawn to these words and can't get them off her mind. In the first chapter she discusses her childhood exposure to death, her anxiety/depression, and how she fought to overcome these in the past. She then tells the reader how she answered the above question: she says, "Instead of treating my anxiety and unhappiness as things I needed to completely get rid of, which is what I’d been trying to do my entire life, the Jewish ideas I was learning helped me control my thoughts and heal my heart" (pg 25, para 2).

I like the way the author sets up the problem and solution right away, then explains that she intends to coach the reader through this process in the following chapters. Great start to the book.
