I was surprised and pleased by how much I liked this book. The summary makes it sound like the book could go in a very different direction, but instead of being a paranormal romance, it ends up being a very atmospheric story about family, secrets, and belonging. I loved it.

This definitely reads like it came out of a writing workshop, but that's not a bad thing. I enjoyed the writing style and the straightforward narration, even when describing extremely weird events.

Also did I say atmospheric? I loved the claustrophobic small town and the claustrophobic house and all the secrets. I was even fine with Eleanor's patchy memory, because it just seemed to fit in with all the other weird, dark things going on.

Taking a step back, the plot is fairly simple (except for some of the family secrets) and the big beats are totally expected, but I still found it all really satisfying, because it's not so much about guessing what will happen next, but experiencing all the emotions.

I definitely recommend this one.
