For lovers of Shirley Jackson

I really really loved 'What Big Teeth'! The tone reminded me of Shirley Jackson's work (especially We Have Always Lived in the Castle) and Hemlock Grove by Brian McGreevy in a great way. Although there is a sinister atmosphere throughout the story, this didn't quite cross into horror for me while still being creepy and gripping.

Rose's writing pulled me in from the start, as we meet Eleanor and try to figure out why she is being summoned home to her eclectic family (and also see that Eleanor is not the most reliable narrator). As the plot unfolds, one of my favorite aspects was Eleanor's relationship to her family members-- how she perceives their past relationships and why she can't connect with her sister and grandfather especially but can't quite figure out why.

SPOILER: I was so distracted by trying to figure out what magical creature Arthur was (vampire? golem?) that I felt that the middle section was a little slow BUT it didn't take away from the overall plot, I am just impatient!

I hope that Rose Szabo writes more in this world or another-- their work is fresh, unsettling and engaging.
