"What Big Teeth" by Rose Szabo is a highly descriptive and dreamily dark tale about a family of shape-shifting, blood-thirsty wolves. Narrator Eleanor has run away from her boarding school after attacking and biting a fellow classmate, returning to her mysterious manor home after eight years away. Her large family is terrifying and eccentric, and they barely acknowledge her upon her return. Teens who feel "invisible" in their own families may feel a bond to Eleanor in these moments. Otherwise, the start of the story is somewhat cryptic. Readers may be confused as to whether the book is set in the past or the present (there are clues, but it may not be clear to some, especially with the modern cover art). The chapters are long, and the trajectory of the story is nebulous at best. Give to teens who love menacing fairy tale fiction or creepy suspense novels with body horror, such as "The Wilder Girls" by Rory Power.
