3.5 stars. I received this book in a BookishFirst giveaway.

I liked the inclusion of reincarnation and bhutas. It was an interesting and unique magic system, especially with Kajal’s ability to revive the dead. And of course, you have to love Kutaa, the undead dog.

I felt that the world-building was a little lacking. It is supposed to be based on Indian mythology, something I am completely ignorant in, so I really felt I needed more explanation to understand the world.

I really loved the characters, especially Tav. It was hard to root for Kayak when she was acting so selfish, but she did grow some by the end and I started to like her better. I was confused by some of the things the characters said and did. There is one point in the book where Advaith says something and Kayla has a visceral reaction, and I didn’t really understand why until later. But then Advaith says “That’s a lot to take in, I know.” Which made absolutely no sense to me. When I read it, I searched back through the page to see if I had missed something. There was just a lot going on in this book and sometimes it was hard to keep it all straight.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and I will likely pick up the sequel when it comes out.
