At the beginning of the book, Kajal is running away from everything --- the consequences of her actions, the law, the mysterious blight that is plaguing her kingdom. Her dead sister's violent spirit, her bhuta, is killing people who've wronged Kajal, and Kajal is to undergo an ordeal of poison, until two rebels save her from her fate, on the condition she uses her powers of resurrection to revive the crown prince, who died in battle 20 years ago. She agrees on the condition the rebels bring her her sister's body, and with them she goes to the battlefields and finds the prince's body, only to find out he's not who they expected. They try to save face and parade this boy, Tav, as the crown prince, but the rebels aren't fools, and so now, together, they must find the crown prince again, but for real this time.
There's a lot of plot twists in this story, but they're simple enough that you can guess most of them. The main character, Kajal is so grumpy and messy and endearing despite not meaning to be, and Tav is so likable. Their dynamic, along with Kajal and Lasya's, is so adorable, and there's this section towards the end where it all kind of feels like fate.
Overall, this is a really cute book, with an undead dog, a grumpy MC, Indian mythology, a nonbinary character, and crazy shenanigans. You name it, this book has it. I'd highly recommend!
