This one took me a long time to get into it. Once I did, it was exciting and alluring, but I had to read about 2/3 of it before getting sucked in. I love a good Found Family story, and a strong female lead who has to break societal or gender expectations to help her family/community. So this book has all of that, plus a tortured male protagonist who wants to be good despite his horrible father (love that one, too), and a magical gang of explorers.

I got this book originally in an OwlCrate box, which was great, except that when they send me the first book in a series the month it debuts, it can be hard to keep up with the whole series to completion. I think for this one, though, it's worth rereading the first book or at least a synopsis in order to check out the sequel, We Free the Stars. I'm invested enough in these characters to see where their story takes them, and I'm especially glad to hear it's a duology, so I only have to wait a little bit for the story to come to a full conclusion (I hope).
