I was immediately invested the second I started reading. Oftentimes it takes a few pages or chapters before I can really get into a book, but the world building and character development was incredible and intriguing from the start. Zafira is a strong female protagonist, and the alternating point of view helps assert her position as an independent heroine, rather than being there for the benefit of a love story or a man. There is a love story within the plot line, and while comes to the forefront of the plot lines as the novel progresses, it is not the main reason the characters exist. They have their own individual traumas and goals that need to be overcome and achieved, which adds a deeper level to the character development. The themes of feminism and doing what's right, along with the idea that selfishness is sometimes okay help make this a progressive novel. I can't wait to read the second novel in the series!
