Zafira is the Hunter, disguised as a man as she traverses the forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, the one who is commanded to assassinate anyone who defies his controlling father, the Sultan. As war brews, Zafira is sent on a mission to retrieve a legendary book that will bring magic back to the land. Nasir is sent by his father to kill the Hunter and steal the book. But there is an ancient evil deeper than the two know, and they find they have to work together to overcome it.

This book had great characterization. These characters had distinct voices in their own POVs. The author was also familiar with the Middle East and its customs, proving for a very real piece of fiction. This plot was unique, and I love the teamwork and relationships between characters that eventually sprouted from their time together and their unexplored pasts.

Zafira and Nasir are the main characters. We see Zafira soon see that her disguised façade is not necessary to be who she truly is. She can be fierce and brave and true even when she can be seen as a woman. For Nasir, we know his heart is not truly one of murder, but he is a child enslaved in a cycle of abuse. We see him overcome his trauma and become someone who vows never to take another life. Someone who is going to stand up to his father, despite the dangers.

Again, I loved how the author had distinct character voice and riveting details about the land and the magic. I loved how each relationship progressed, and that made me want to keep reading.
