Zafira is known as the hunter, but what no one knows is that she's a girl. She has been hunting in the cursed forest, the Arz, to bring food to her fellow villagers. Nasir is the crown prince of the realm, but is known as the Prince of Death. He does what his father, the Sultan, commands him to protect the people he cares for. When these two are set on a collision course to find and set free magic, they challenge each other in ways no one has before.

While this was enjoyable, nothing really stuck with me. It was solidly middle of the road for me. I think the main reason was because this felt so similar to An Ember in the Ashes, but I didn't really care for either of the main characters here. While I didn't hate anyone, I couldn't bring myself to get invested in anyone's plight.

The main thing I noticed from Zafira's POV was her resentment of her culture and religion that forces women to cover and hide. Zafira wants to be equal to any man and pursue her dreams. I absolutely loved that message and I hope we continue to see Zafira stand up to the patriarchy.

The ending had some fascinating tidbits, so I think I'll continue with the sequel when it comes out.
