Thought Provoking
The book is about three generations of Balsam women. Mary, Civil War era, Nora, 1960’s Detroit, and Diane, 2018. The story starts with Diane, a reporter who is approached by Mr. Rich, to return a camera and pictures that belong to Nora, Diane’s great-aunt. Diane isn’t interested in findin Nora, until Mr. Rich states that the pictures are from the 1967 riots in Detroit. As a reporter, she shows interest and is disheartened when Mr. Rich did not bring the pictures. The book progresses where we see three generations of white Balsam women who love African-American men. Each story shows the struggles of each generation, and how many things have not changed. We also watch Diane grow as a person as she moves from trying to write the story that will propel her career to being a good friend to Nora. I loved this book and highly recommend it
