I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of Erin Bartels debut novel of We Hope For Better Things and enjoyed every single minute of it.
She writes of three women from different generations during the span of the Civil War, to the 1960's riots, to the present days of Detroit amd the struggles of slavery and rascism. Bartels did such an amazing job of going from one generation to the next, with such ease and flow.
You can't help but fall in love with Mary, Nora, and Elizabeth. Three women from different times, but who unknownly have so many things in common. Elizabeth who is trying to uncover the past. Nora who is trying to forget the past. And Mary who is trying to survive. You can't help but feel the emotions of these women. Their fears and struggles. Their strength to try and make a difference and to stand up for what's right. Their heartache when they realize just how cold people could be. Their passions and desires of love and friendships. This book will stay with me for a long time and one that I would recommend over and over again!
