This is a well written book that looks at the effects of race relations in the relationships of three generations of women. The three women are all related and the author looks at the problems faced by these women in three different times, the Civil War era, the 1960s, and the present day. While all three story lines are interesting, I found myself drawn the most to the present day sections of the book and the decisions that Elizabeth needs to make. I liked Elizabeth a lot and the author did a great job of showing her struggles in making the right choices for not just her but those around her.

The book takes place in Detroit and in an old farmhouse in Lapeer County which is some ways north of Detroit. The setting really becomes a part of this story and I really felt like I was transported to these places in the book. I also enjoyed all of the references to the beautiful quilts that are made in the farmhouse in Lapeer. This is a great book about important times in our countries history and the author does a great job of bringing them to life.
