This book is an awesome and realistic look at life in three different times of history: during the Civil War, during the 1960’s, and the present. The author weaves together the story of women who lived and survived during these eras, presenting with amazing details the challenges presented during each time. Mary was left alone during the Civil War, left to keep the home fires burning while her husband Nathaniel goes off to fight in the war. In her quest for survival, Mary has to depend on a runaway slave named George who helps her in more ways than she could have ever fathomed. Nora fell in love with William when she met him at an art museum. The fact that he was a different race did not matter to her, but it certainly mattered to everyone else in the color-conscious 1960’s. Finally, there is the story of journalist Elizabeth Balsam who loses her current job in Detroit and decides to deliver some photos to a long-long relative in the country. Her story parallels that of the other women, but it is told with current themes. The story of the prejudice that was prevalent drew me and kept me interested in reading. There was a love story, but mostly it is a story of perseverance and survival, of the belief that all men are created equal and then living it out.
