I knew I was going to like this book as soon as I read the first look and I felt like I was in the car with Avery traveling to Bardell. The author did a great job of being descriptive without making the book drag out.
The book centers around 3 teenage girls, but honestly I liked almost all of the characters. Mama Letty is a firecracker, I love her! The way I sobbed at the end :( Avery's dad had the potential to be my absolute favorite character in the whole book, but he wasn't mentioned enough.
Now let's talk about the plot. This is a wonderful YA novel about what it's like to be a biracial lesbian in a brand new high school in a pretty conservative area. There is complex family drama that spans decades, as well as small town gossip and secrets that span generations. This wasn't as fast-paced as I normally read, but it was phenomenally done. I honestly can't believe it's the authors debut novel. I will definitely be reading her future books.
