I’m here for the romance, but stayed for the vibes!

We Deserve Monuments is a beautifully written YA novel, that focuses on a multitude of important concepts while exploring small town mysteries. We follow Avery a girl who’s life has just been uprooted from her comfortable life in DC. Her mom decides to move them to a small town in Georgia to be with Mama Letty who’s been diagnosed with Cancer. The move brings up old family trauma, and a long conflict that separated Mama Letty and Avery’s mother. Avery is stuck in the middle of a crumbling family and her own problems that seem to consume her. This book made me cry, a simple line brought back memories of my grandmother, who was very similar to Avery’s grandmother. I feel like the “mystery” is not really the most important part of the novel, but it helps the reader get to know the characters and see their perspectives on life. Overall, it’s a great debut novel!
