We Deserve Monuments is a debut novel by Jas Hammonds. I really like the cover. It is a young adult contemporary with mystery and romance elements. This book has a diverse cast of characters with bipic and LGBT+ representation. The author does a great job with representing both. This book follows our main character Avery who moves from her home to spend time with grandma before she dies of a terminal illness. Avery begins to wonder about the tension between her mother and grandma and gets to the bottom of it. Meanwhile she meets a girl named Simone and a romance blossoms. The romance was my favorite part of this book. I liked the mystery aspects but the twists did not have much an impact. This book felt like it was in two different directions and I think it could've been tied together better. Overall it was an enjoyable debut with important themes.
