Teen and adult readers will enjoy this novel about family and growing up and what makes us what we are. I found the interplay between White, Black, and Mixed character revealing. Avery, Simone, and Letty are the most fully drawn characters, and I found their stories the most interesting. Jade was not as fully developed as her friends, and her parents were stereotypes of rich Southerners.
I liked the evenings the friends spent in the woods and at the Renaissance. The descriptions of both people and place are wonderful. The way the author tells the story is very well done. I could feel myself there. The family mysteries that are revealed throughout the story kept me reading, as did the family and friend relationships and the changes in them. Life under Jim Crow also comes into play here as does the Klan. I got very invested in this book, and I was sorry when I finished reading it.
