This is a promising start to a YA story that seems ready to take on some big topics from the perspective of a young woman of color who is abruptly uprooted from her big-city lifestyle to her mom's rural Southern hometown. These chapters hint at family secrets across generations as well as new ties among the younger generation and I'm excited to read further to see what Avery will face.
