The cover is stunning - I love the artwork! I think it sets the mood perfectly for this story. And it will really draw people in to pick this one up. From the first look, it's already starting to touch on some modern, progressive themes that I think will be very appealing for its audience. The family is moving to a small town that, in some ways, seems very set in past ignorance and closed-mindedness. I believe we will get to see a very emotional coming-of-age story about sexuality, learning to confidently express your authentic self, and the struggles that someone with mixed heritage often faces. The family and their neighbors appear to have complex relationships that I imagine will be tested and explored throughout the story. Personally, I don't think this is a book for me or for my personal reading interests. But I am objectively giving my first impression a solid four stars because I think it will be a well-received debut by its target audience. I am opting out of the raffle so that someone who may actually love this book will have a better chance at winning a copy!
