None of us want to hurt or disappoint our family. In fact, we would do anything to protect our families, keep them happy, and make them proud of us. Even if that means keeping them in the dark about some of our choices, mishaps and circumstances. Although we are individuals, and our choices, mishaps, circumstances, etc... are our own; these things can also have repercussions on our family as a unit.
This is in fact what the book "We Are the Brennans" is about. Sunday Brennan has moved away from her family so she doesn't have to face them about something in her past. Her oldest brother is trying to keep the family business afloat but keeps making poor decisions that gets him deeper in trouble. The Brennan father has some past choices of his creep up on him. I haven't even mentioned the remaining family members and what they have going on as well.
This is a wonderful book that delves into the complexities of family and the responsibilities we are obligated to within our families.
"Family didn't mean hiding the hard stuff from each other, it meant facing it together. And it meant forgiving each other." (271)
