βοΈI want to be really transparent before I begin this review and say that my review star number is purely based on the fact that the author choose to use a slur to describe a piece of clothing typically associated with Romani culture. I enjoyed the read, but unfortunately the inclusion of this slur is inexcusable for me. I reached out to the author asking what the intention was, and she said she used it as basically just any old adjective.

I wouldnβt call it a cliff hanger, but it is begging for a sequel for sure.

β The story surprised me with how much I enjoy it. The writing is paced well with a mix of story telling mediums that help to convey emotions and meaning
β I really loved the inside look into family dynamics. The author did this in many ways, but the most notable way is how the author used a third person multi-POV to show two sides of the same conversation in back-to-back chapter. It helped bring events to life.
β The family pub was believable and a great setting for much of the story.

β As noted, the use of a slur is just not something Iβm able to let go.
β Some events felt glossed over, but Iβm still unsure if that was just part of the storytelling or if it was truly glossed over.

I do not recommend this book due to the slur used within it. I think because the audience for this book is adult, the other problematic ideas are more okay because adults are less impressionable overall. This is jot always true, so I think those who are aware of bias and problematic themes would be able to parse through them in this book. But because of the slur, it is hard to recommend at all.
