There must be more to the story...
It would be easy to believe that the plot of Watching You by Lisa Jewell revolves around simple, aimless Joey developing a murderous obsession with her distinguished and handsome neighbour, Tom Fitzwilliam, as she grows tired of her Ibiza-fling-turned-husband. In fact, that is what we are led to believe, as the novel opens with the inspection of a murder scene and a subsequent police interview in which Joey all but admits her illicit connection to Mr. Fitzwilliam. However, those of us who are familiar with Jewell, her propensity for a twist and a character that is carrying more than meets the eye, know there must be more to the story. The preview of Watching You left me wondering. How does a listless former expat end up as the prime suspect in a murder? Is it really respected teacher Tom Fitzwilliam who ends up dead on the floor in a pile of blood? And what is the origin of the single tassel, "just a thing fallen from a fancy handbag" found casually lingering in the crime scene? The cover of Watching You only reinforces my suspicions: this tale will involve voyeurism, peering through windows, and the cloistering smallness of a neighbourhood magnified.
