The bits here from Joey's POV would be rather unremarkable--except that Ms. Jewell alternates them with a clear murder investigation, one that involves Joey herself! The back-and-forth timeline then becomes gripping, because the reader needs to know who has been killed and how Joey (and Tom?) get from where the excerpt ends to a body on the floor...
