Watch Over Me started off great for me. I was sympathetic to this young woman, aging out of the system. I was angry with her foster parents for not adopting her, because... Like, why wouldn't you? It's the best and easiest thing in the world to bring a child you've cared for WHO IS NOW AN ADULT into your family by giving them your name. She didn't even seem like someone who would want MORE than that. She wanted to be self sufficient. She would have even gotten a job an her own pla...

Anyway, this was my internal monologue when I read it. She was packed for with almost nothing to a weird job at a weird haunted farm to work out her trauma with some strange people who kept telling her how it's almost impossible to run away and showing her how she would die or drown if she tried. Oh and it's haunted. There are ghosts. Metaphorical and somewhat literal.

I get that this was supposed to be deeply haunting and beautiful, but I just kept thinking about what a raw deal this girl got in life from the jump and some people do get that in life. Maybe some people might think I got kind of a raw deal, but listen: that's why I read. Because books are cheaper than therapy. This one made me sit in it and think about it and it was deeply uncomfy...

And maybe you need that sometimes.
