At the beginning of the book I thought it would focus a lot on the main characters journey through the foster care system but I was totally wrong. The story starts out with Mila applying for and getting a placement at a farm where she will live and work teaching young children. She is very excited to go out there. Some place to call her own where she can be somewhat independent. Upon arriving, she starts to encounter weird things, such as ghosts at night out in the fields doing weird things. She doesn't seem startled but intrigued. As time goes on, she realizes that one of these ghosts is a ghost of herself and the other ghosts represent others on the farm. Once she is able to come to terms with her past and be satisfied in her present, she meets with her ghost one night to finally put her to rest. Once she is able to do this then she can finally live without this huge weight on her shoulders. It was touching to experience this in the book because this is all something we could stand to do.
