Oh my goodness, friends, THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD.

This book follows Mila, a recent high school graduate who is grappling with a traumatic childhood and what she should do in her life. She is offered a job at a fam where two foster parents raise so many foster children that they hire interns to help homeschool the children and work on the farm. She is excited for a place where she belongs after being a foster child herself. Before taking the job she is cautioned that they hope ghosts won’t scare her off, and sure enough she sees ghosts as early as her first night there.

I loved the format of the book. There were different sections of the book that had beautifully typed out names in italics on a page all their own followed by one or more chapters.

The style of prose was almost hypnotizing as we learned about Mila’s life before the farm as well as her day-to-day activities as she settles into her new and secluded life. There’s imagery of ghosts sprinkled throughout the story. The story shows her seeing something “today” and how it triggers a traumatic flashback for her from her youth.

This was my first time reading a book by Nina LaCour and I am SO GLAD I did because I have been completely won over and want to read all past and future works now. Also I completely adore this cover. The combo of beautiful cover and endpapers may make it one of the most beautiful books I own which you all know is the highest praise from me!

Despite it being somewhat of a ghost story, this book is not scary, but rather I felt like it was very therapeutic to read about others healing from traumatic experiences.

THANK YOU to Bookish First, Nina LaCour, and Dutton books for granting me this giveaway book! All opinions are my own.

PS - there is a Goodreads giveaway right now for this book. Go go go! :)
