Thank you Dutton Books for this advanced finished copy. I feel extremely fortunate for the chance to read this novel. This was a sweet, haunting, poetic, quick read and I loved it. The story telling blended past and present swirling them together until they felt like they were same. It’s hard to describe this book as the writing was beautiful but unique. I finished this book in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. Mila is aging out of foster care and her social worker has secured her an interview for a unique position on a farm teaching the children that have been fostered or adopted. Mila is desperate for this chance and I felt sorrow about how some of her desperation came from lack of options. An all too familiar tale for our foster youth. Mila makes it to the farm and is surprised to find it is haunted. Mila’s thoughts as she remembers her own haunted past and gets to know her new family and their ghosts were lovely. She is insightful, kind, and so very broken. I could not help but hope along with her that she had found her place to belong. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough.
