I first picked up this book because of the absolutely gorgeous cover but the plot and atmosphere were so impressively crafted! I liked that it was more quiet and contemplative and I enjoyed the rural atmosphere because it reminded me of the things I love about my own hometown. The author's discussion of loneliness and otherness is so masterful. I think the best psychological horrors are ones that play on emotions the everyday person experiences than using concrete physical elements to scare the reader. I did not go into this book expecting it to discuss trauma so frankly, but I was absolutely swept away by it. I was also enthralled with the author's discussion of the foster care system and how that intertwines with the intense themes of loneliness. I wish I could forget all about this book and read it over again to experience the same emotions I did while reading it the first time. I will definitely be picking up Nina LaCour's work in the future.
