Sometimes a book is too personal to be reviewed with sufficient objectivity.
Mila has just aged out of the foster system and has found herself in an internship at a remote farm as a teacher. As she discovers the ghosts of the farm, Mila experiences a haunting of her own and struggles with her own past and actions.

Watch Over Me is an atmospheric exploration of trauma, self-acceptance, and healing. While the book is fairly short and reads quickly, LaCour manages to pack in hard-hitting emotional moments, slowly paying out the mysteries of both the past and present in the characters' lives. With a realistic portrayal of PTSD and the struggles of healing, this slim volume manages to marry magical realism, mystery, and mental illness. Highly recommend to genre readers, especially those struggling to heal from their own traumas.
