The relationship between Onyii and Ify is both tragic and beautiful. I found it interesting that the story is based on the author's mother, who was a young child during the Nigerian civil war. However, you can tell from the cover that this is a work of nonfiction and the war has torn people apart and put them back together robotically or even revitalized with crystals. The war has also gotten friends questioning friends family and is very Girls Vs. Boys in a way. Onyii holds memories of a time her mother wanted her to come home but instead she leaves to join woman warriors.

I decided to look up biafra war girls from the Nigerian War and ended up getting a really great history lesson while reading the book. Cept instead of it being 1967 it was 2172 where in the future girls can become augments, robotic insects fly out of hair to help fix a water break, and people live on earth or space. As futuristic as is sounds there is still a shortage of napkin for bleeding girls on their period and children soldiers fighting in wars they didn't start.
