The world building is BONKERS good, combining a climate change ravaged world w insanely advanced technology. I get why a lot of people are referencing Black Panther when talking about this book.

The characters are soo developed and realized. Onyii is a soldier for the rebel Biafran army, so you know her life is messed up and she is gonna struggle to find some kinda normal, and then we get Ify, Onyii’s little “sister” and one major incident gets them both on two wildly different but similar courses that just like…it’s so heavy but sooooooo good

The writing blew my mind, how the voices of these girls were captured so well, how the descriptiveness made this world so ALIVE in my head. Off to add more Onyebuchi books to my TBR and then cry about how many more books to read

I literally know nothing about the Nigerian civil war, which Onyebuchi drew from while writing this book. I’m not gonna say I’m embarrassed i don’t know bc look guys world history is a joke in the US. and i’m still trying to educate myself on Filipino history (and i'm half Filipino), I AM gonna say that no joke I'm gonna go learn more about the Nigerian civil war and i'm glad when people write a book that makes me say “yes i will go educate myself further on this topic”

YOOOOO THERE IS A SECOND BOOK COMING. I AM READY BUT NOT READY FOR IT BECAUSE I”M STILL PROCESSING THE ENDING.
