This book felt very similar to Where the Crawdads Sing. The nature scene was strong and an important part of the character’s life. They tell a lot of climate change and bark beetles and science. However for me, that part felt too descriptive and therefore it made it drag a bit.
I did enjoy how we saw the past and this mystery about who killed and who hid this secret for so many years. It built the story and set the scene for the present day chapters. The characters come back years later and are reunited. Some have changed, others remain set in their ways. The topic of illegal immigration is one that impacts the secret and is discussed a lot throughout. Caddie and Danielle’s friendship was so innocent and beautiful but that summer changed everything. It was nice to see them be able to rekindle and reconnect. Overall it was a good book just not my favorite.
