Just from the short excerpt I can tell the story will focus on the environment and nature. The author spends a lot of detail setting the scene and describing the places while Cadie is traveling through them. Since I live in the city, I rarely see wildlife or travel to places with undisturbed nature. The details in the story allow me to picture the scenery vividly and I feel relaxed and content in the wild with Cadie. I also feel Cadie's passion for protecting the environment. Although it's not the main focus of this story, Cadie's passion shows a lot about her personality, morals, and personal history.
The foreshadowing kept me interested but I wish there were more clues. I'm not sure why Cadie was so afraid of her parents and nervous around them when they seemed like normal artists that lived off the grid. Perhaps it's related to the incident in the past that Cadie is afraid of/running away from? I would like to read on and find out more!
