Leif Enger's "Peace Like a River" is in the top ten of my list of favorite books and I looked forward to his new novel. The premise was interesting, but I felt that the book didn't progress much from there. Virgil's traumatic brain injury left him feeling somewhat "not there" and I also felt that he wasn't fully present in his life. There are many characters in this novel and few of them held my interest. It seemed that the story meandered along and didn't go much of anywhere until the last twenty or so pages. At that point, the events seemed to come out of the blue and didn't seem connected to the rest of the book.

I give this three out of five stars due to the elegance of the writing.
