Virgil Wander is simply a lovely, beautifully written book. One day Virgil Wander drives off the road into Lake Superior. He is saved by a friend, but is left with some brain damage where he has trouble remembering some words and some bits of his life before. Virgil is a bachelor who runs a movie theater in a tired Mid-Western town. There is a kite-flying stranger, a boy fishing for a legendary size fish and other funny characters in town.
Virgil and the townspeople are quirky and endearing. This is a novel that just grew on me. I read so many fast-paced books that I loved slowing down and enjoying this one. There are so many quotes worth remembering. Leif Enger is now on my list of "must-read" authors.
