Never have I ever read a book that involved kites ....

A very talented man taking ten years off from writing and coming back out with this new book, it is bound to be magnificent. That's a whole lot of thinking!!
I'm intrigued right off of the bat with the mention of kites, I've never read a book where anyone's hobby was flying kites. How often in recent books these days do characters smoke pipes either? I think this will be a great change of scenery than what I'm used to reading. I'm ready for it!
So my first question would be why did Virgil's car fly off of the side of the road? Did he swerved to avoid something or someone? Was his mind deep in thought and not paying attention? Has he been drinking? Also...what is going on in this town where someone has dissapeared and other "tragedies" have gone on?
I'm interested to see how there can be love and laughter and loss and confusion all wrapped into one tale! I hope I get picked to read this one :)
