This book grabbed me from the very beginning and never let go. I loved traveling with Seelie and Isolde as they journeyed with former rivals Olani and Raze to find answers and possibly ancient treasure that holds promises of a brighter future. The first person point of view told through Seelie felt vivid and authentic. I enjoyed how I got to live through her eyes--eyes of an autistic person. I've read books for younger readers with autistic characters, but this the first time I can say I have a new understanding and empathy because of this novel (and the author NEVER mentions autism in any form).

The world building and magic system is well done and unique and I quickly became a believer that this world exists. I so enjoyed Birch the Brownie pretending to be a cat for Seelie and her sister. Other magical creatures however were meant to be terrifying and that they were to me.

I enjoyed the sisterly relationship as well as the hints of romance that never dominated the plot. The banter at times was sarcastic and full of inside jokes. The humor was also my style and balanced the suspense and danger always present on the journey.

There will be a sequel, right? I need more answers and more Birch.
