I might be slightly biased because I am a big Paul Holes fan and I've followed some of his work before. However, I can objectively say that this is a great book! Unmasked is raw and real and follows Holes throughout his career, from his early gumshoe days discovering his passion for cold cases, all the way through to the most movie worthy career finale - the arrest of the Golden State Killer (which is in no small way attributed to his efforts). Holes is frank - he addresses his weaknesses and failings as a husband and father, his obsession with his work, and his proclivity to self medicate with alcohol. Through his lens, the reader sees how traumatic the life of an investigator can be and how invested they can become in the outcome of their cases. This book really only looks at a couple of the cases that Holes became involved in over the course of his career and is by far most connected to the GSK case as it follows Holes' investigation over the decades as the science changes. It's definitely a worthy book to check out if you have an interest in true crime and cold cases or if you are particularly invested in GSK lore.
