I had trouble with the beginning of Unmasked, so much so that it took me around a week to read 50 pages. I was enraptured by the cold cases themselves, but I did not care so much for Paul Holes's family issues and thought it distracted from the meat of the book.
That being said, when I got over my initial reader's block, I found the book quite engaging. My only real criticism about the majority of the book would be that sometimes Holes would repeat chunks of information from former chapters for fear that the reader had forgotten in later chapters, and I do think Holes could have delved a bit more into the politics of his investigations considering the staggering amount of violence against women and girls in the cases covered in the book, but otherwise I loved it. He did a great job of boiling down his cases so that the average, non-forensic knowledgeable reader could understand them, and the combination of fascinating, gory material along with fast-paced recounts made for a good read.
