Not only is Paul Holes an extremely talented criminal investigator, he, along with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author Robin Gaby Fisher, knows how to write a story that pulls you in right away and threatens never to let go. Holes, introspective and anxious, yet confident and determined, gives his readers a glimpse into what he considers his biggest failings in life, not being there for his family. But Holes also shows us his biggest successes, finding the perpetrators of heinous crimes and bringing closure and justice to their victims. Throughout his career, there has been one case that has always been in the back of his mind, that of the Golden State Killer. By Holes' account, more than one hundred investigators had tried and tried to crack the cold case of the serial rapist and murderer who terrorized communities up and down the California coastline, yet none of them, including Holes, had ever come close to finding out who it really was. Well, not until Holes retired and applied his intense singular focus and cold case-solving skills on the case...

Part narrative of Holes' inner thoughts and feelings about his personal life, and part true-crime documentary, this book reeled me in and kept me engaged as he shared details of cold cases that were solved along the way, like those of Laci Peterson and Jaycee Dugard, while navigating his career-long hunt for the Golden State Killer (aka the East Area Rapist or Original Nightstalker). I especially enjoyed Holes’ narrative of his meeting and subsequent relationship with Michelle McNamara, the author of I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, giving us another perspective and glimpse into the work they did together to find the true identity of GSK – Joseph James DeAngelo. Holes’ retelling of the heinous crimes committed by the GSK and the trail of tears and devastation he left behind in his wake was chilling and eye-opening. Was it worth it in the end to keep the promise he made to a young victim? I guess you’ll have to read to find out…

I highly recommend this book to anyone who, like me, has ever been obsessed with learning about how to solve cold cases, or just has an interest in the Golden State Killer. Paul Holes takes you on a journey you will never forget!
