Readers may think they know what to expect when they pick up this memoir, but every page is a surprise because of the extreme sorrow, knowing that this book is true. Author Paul Holes is to be commended for his ability to give the public not only a glimpse into the horrific details of the mental and physical torture of victims of all ages, but a reminder of the life-long anguish of those left behind after such senseless crime. In addition, readers understand the effect on the lives of professionals who work to solve such crimes.

The author candidly admits that he became so emotionally distanced from his first wife and children that the marriage ended in divorce, despite the couple's attempt at counseling. The details of Holes's work days and nights were so grisly that his wife didn't want to hear them, and Holes was so involved in digging through cold case files and evidence that he sometimes fell asleep in his office and failed to even call home and reassure his wife that he was safe. The, although the author remarried, he found himself in the same pattern of being an absentee dad.

In addition to an insider's view of infamous California crime scenes , there are also lessons for individuals who believe the CSI is the career path for them: the author warns about this career even though he thought he was prepared, based on his college major of biochemistry. In addition, there are other lessons lessons to be learned. For example, the importance of books such as those in the crime library which served as important guides. There is also the reminder that the press sometimes gives more coverage to crimes in some neighborhoods where violent crimes were historically more unusual than in the so-called "crime ridden" areas, even though the crimes are just as devastating to families of any race or religion.

This book is as engaging as any thriller fiction novel. It is a page turner: sad, disturbing, gut wrenching. Be prepared!
