I was lucky enough to win a raffle here at Bookish First and receive an advanced copy of Unmasked. I've been familiar with Paul Holes for several years thanks to his work with Golden State Killer. This brutally honest memoir reveals the side of true crime heroes we rarely think about--their human side. Mr. Holes didn't hold back in sharing struggles regarding his mental health and maintaining relationships throughout his career in law enforcement. I am incredibly grateful for all the work he and others in his position have done, and in slight awe that every single one of them haven't emotionally burned themselves to piles of ash after all they see and experience.

A great read that I got through in three sittings. Wonderful reminder when we look at these big cases to think of the victims and the human heroes doing the work to catch the perpetrators. This book extensively covers his work on Golden State Killer. But when I hear of Laci Peterson, I won't think of how Mr. Holes also worked on that case but how a homicide detective he knew was the victim in the autopsy room across the hall. Same with Jaycee Dugard. Yes, it was another big case he worked on, but I'll also be reminded of the desperation he felt while trying to find any clues that might link that suspect to other cold cases.
